Man arrested after truck stolen, pursuit

A man was arrested after a truck was stolen from a home near Edinburgh.

A resident in the 7100 block of U.S. 31 South told police someone had come into the home and had taken the keys to the truck, a small flashlight and $4,800, along with the truck, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

Shortly after, a deputy spotted the stolen truck driving nearby on U.S. 31, and tried to make a traffic stop. The driver pulled into a nearby business, parked the truck and ran. The deputy yelled at the man to stop and chased him until he stopped and surrendered, the report said.

The man, Shawn J. Tatman, 40, 222 Patterson Road, Columbus, told police he was returning the vehicle to the owner, the report said. He also told police he had gone into the home through an unlocked door and called for the resident, who he thought was sleeping, and then took the keys and a small flashlight from a bedroom, the report said.

Residents showed police surveillance video from their home, showing a man in the same clothing Tatman was wearing. They also reported finding a ladder leaning up against the home and evidence of a burglary inside the home, the report said.

Tatman was arrested on a charge of burglary, residential entry, auto theft, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and resisting law enforcement.

He was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $10,400 bond.
