Fire destroys home: Pair escape serious injury

A southern Johnson County home was destroyed in a Thursday morning fire, but two residents escaped unharmed.

Just before 6 a.m., firefighters were called to the home in the 8500 block of S. County Road 700W, southwest of Trafalgar, near Morgantown, Trafalgar Fire Department Chief Tom Tharpe said.

When police and firefighters arrived, the first floor of the home was engulfed in flames, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

Firefighters went into the home through the basement and found heavy fire on the first floor, and then continued to fight flames in the ceiling. Fire crews were also dealing with below freezing conditions, Tharpe said.

Two residents of the home, a woman and her son, were both able to get outside before firefighters arrived, Tharpe said. The woman was taken to the hospital by a family member to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters spent about three hours putting out the blaze. The home is a total loss, Tharpe said.

The family that lived at the home were renters, the sheriff’s office report said. The family had not asked for any assistance, Tharpe said.

The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire, Tharpe said.

Bagersville, Morgantown, Nineveh and Hamblin Township fire departments assisted in putting out the blaze, Tharpe said.
