Man accused of pointing gun in road rage incident

Police arrested a man after another motorist reported he had pointed a gun at him in a road rage incident.

Deputies were called to a road rage incident on U.S. 31, south of Franklin, at 3:15 p.m. Friday. Police followed the vehicle to State Road 252, near Trafalgar, where an officer stopped the vehicle.

The driver, Corey Spears, 27, Trafalgar, told police another vehicle cut him off and slammed on their brakes. When he passed the vehicle, he pulled out an unloaded gun that belonged to his girlfriend and pointed it at them to show them he was angry, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report. At the time, Spears had a 6-month-old and 3-year-old in the back seat of the vehicle, the report said.

Police spoke to the people in the other vehicle, a man and woman and a young child, who said Spears had been following them closely and when he passed them, he pointed a gun at them and gestured as if he was firing, the report said. They followed Spears’ vehicle until police stopped it, the report said.

Officers found Spears and his girlfriend did not have a permit to carry the handgun, the report said.

Spears, 7 Lakewood Drive, was arrested on a charge of carrying a handgun without a license and pointing a firearm. He was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was released on $2,000 bond.
