Joe G. Lafary, 69, a lifetime Morgan County resident, passed suddenly from this life on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, at his home.

He was one of eight children born to Omer and Inez (Gerholdt) Lafary. He was born on Monday, May 26, 1947 in Morgan County.

Joe served his country honorably in the U.S. Army.

He enjoyed mushroom and bird hunting, working outside with his heavy equipment and relaxing on his front porch, watching people pass by. The love of his life were his children and grandchildren.

Joe retired from Joe Lafary Trenching and Plumbing. He previously worked for Earl Gray and Sons Plumbing in Bargersville and Kellie Plumbing in Franklin.

He was an active member of the Samaria Christian Church in Trafalgar, where he took great pride in caring for the church lawn and was known by many as the “candy man.”

He was also a member of the American Legion Post 230 and the Columbus Emmaus.

On July 10, 1971, he married Connie A. (Schmidt) Lafary; she survives, living in Martinsville. He also leaves behind a host of loving family including his children, Jeffrey L. Lafary of Indianapolis and Erin G. (Jacob) Craig of Martinsville; grandsons, Landon and Dylan Craig; brothers, Asa (Linda) Lafary of Bargersville and Richard Lafary of Nineveh; sisters, Rebecca Pierce and Mary Seitz of Nineveh, Dorothy Brown of Tennessee and Jean Blackwell of Franklin; and many nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Lafary.

Family and friends are welcome to visit from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Samaria Christian Church, 4779 W. State Road 135, Trafalgar. He will be laid to rest with military honors at the New South Park Cemetery in Martinsville.
