Brenda L. (Cornelius) Burkhart

MORGANTOWN

Brenda L. (Cornelius) Burkhart, 68, of Morgantown, and lifelong resident of Johnson County, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at her residence.

She was born March 15, 1948, in Franklin, to Wilbur and Lela Ruth (Fritche) Cornelius.

She married Dana W. Burkhart on June 17, 1995, at their home in Morgantown; he preceded her in death.

She attended grade school and Hopewell School and was a 1966 graduate of Franklin Community High School.

She had been a banker in Johnson County for 35 years, having recently retired in 2015 from First Farmers Bank in Bargersville. She previously had been associated with Bank of Indiana, MainSource Bank, First Community Bank, Bargersville Savings and Loan and Bargersville State Bank.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Bargersville, the Franklin and Greenwood chambers of commerce, and was a board member of the Bargersville Main Street Group to revitalize downtown.

She enjoyed painting and spending time with her family, grandkids and spoiling the great-grandchildren.

Her greatest accomplishment was to be a great grandmother.

Survivors include her daughter, Kelley Renae Wray (Todd) of Morgantown; a stepdaughter, Annie Burkhart of Franklin; four grandchildren, Amanda L. Hammonds (James) of Brandenburg, Kentucky, Ashley Kernodle of Morgantown, Michael Kernodle Jr. of Franklin and Matthew Wray of Columbus, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Ellie Law, Hunter Humphrey, Aylin McCawley, Scarlet Hammonds; and an expected great-granddaughter in April; her sister, Margaret Woodard of Avon; and her two four-legged friends, Benji and Angel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dana W. Burkhart; son, Ronald R. Thompson on May 28, 2016; a stepson, Eric Burkhart; and a sister, Anita Brewer.

The Rev. Ken Rickett will conduct a service at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 S. U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Burial will be at First Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin.
