Man arrested after leading police on chase

A Greenwood man was arrested after police say he fled during a traffic stop, leading to a chase that reached speeds up to 100 mph.

David John Donelli, 38, 505 W. Smith Valley Road, Apt. 207, Greenwood, was arrested on charges of being a habitual traffic violator, resisting law enforcement, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and giving a false identity statement.

A Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputy was driving north on State Road 37 near Fairview Road at 2:31 a.m. Sunday when he saw a car driven by Donelli going 79 mph. The deputy stopped Donelli on Smith Valley Road, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s office.

After he was stopped, Donelli drove away from the police, heading east on Smith Valley Road. Deputies saw him throw several objects out of the car while driving more than 100 mph, according to the report.

Donelli hit a curb, got out of the vehicle and ran. A deputy caught up to him and arrested him, according to the report.

Deputies found pieces of a mason jar, marijuana and papers at the intersection of Smith Valley and Morgantown roads, according to the report.

Donelli was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $5,400 bond. I-65 lane closure planned this week
