Police: Man arrested after 6 years on the run

A man charged with molesting a child was arrested by U.S. Marshals after six years on the run, police said.

Hipolito Fernandez, 40, of Indianapolis, was charged with child molestation in 2011 after a girl reported he molested her multiple times, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Fernandez had fled the area shortly after police been investigating in the spring of 2011, Edinburgh Police Department Deputy Chief David Lutz said.

At the time, Edinburgh police said they believed Fernandez might have been living or working in Indianapolis, and had asked the public for assistance in looking for him. In the following years, Edinburgh police had at one point enlisted the help of the FBI, and had believed that Fernandez had returned to Mexico, Lutz said.

In October, police began receiving tips that Fernandez may have returned from Mexico and was back in Indianapolis. The Edinburgh Police Department passed along that information to U.S. Marshals, who arrested Fernandez in Indianapolis.

Lutz credited the persistence of the law enforcement community with Fernanez’s arrest.

“It is a relief to me and to most specifically the victim,” Lutz said.

Fernandez, of 3436 Percheron Place, Indianapolis, was taken to the Johnson County jail and held on $8,000 bond.
