Dale L. Tharp

GREENWOOD

Dale L. Tharp, 80, of Greenwood, passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 2, 1936, in Indianapolis to Charles and Irene (Burrell) Tharp. Dale grew up in the Southport area and attended Southport schools. He married his sweet bride Lois Ann (Weaver) Tharp on May 10, 1959, at Bluff Creek Christian Church in Greenwood, and she survives.

Dale owned and operated Dale’s Body Shop in the Smith Valley community of Greenwood for 40 years. Dale truly embraced life and had many interests including fishing, farming, restoring vintage vehicles and sports. He was passionate about baseball, coaching and devoting his time and energy to Little League.

Dale enjoyed attending activities and events his grandchildren were involved in. Dale was an active and faithful member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church in Greenwood. Dale possessed a great love of people and was always friendly to all with a bright smile and inspiring attitude. Dale was very hard working, energetic, generous and kind. He was deeply committed to his faith, family and friends. Dale left a rich legacy to his family and all who were fortunate to know him with the example of the way he lived his full and wonderful life.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Lois Ann (Weaver) Tharp of Greenwood; children, Sheryl Avery of Greenwood, Allison Waltz (Mike) of Trafalgar, and Dan Tharp (Ange) of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren Nicole Yeagley, Jon Lecher, Cody Avery, Jared Waltz (Michelle), Ethan Waltz (Hali), Zach Tharp, Alyssa Tharp, Kenney Smock (Ariel), and Sara Leisch (Bill); nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl Tharp of Indianapolis, Terry Tharp (Pam) of Trafalgar; four sisters, Erma Windsor and Bonnie Messmore (Alan) both of Greenfield, Larai Dicus of Greenwood, Debbie Keen of Crawfordsville; brother in-law, Chuck Munas of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Charles Eugene Tharp, Donald Tharp, Robert Tharp, three sisters Janet Tharp, Shirley Tharp, and Patricia Munas.

A service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church, 381 N. Bluff Road in Greenwood. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 S. U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Greenwood.
