A chilly good time

Unwind from the holidays and pave the way for a prosperous new year during Brown County’s Winter in the Woods this weekend. Activities include hikes, fun runs, yoga and lots of warm treats to help you escape the cold while enjoying the scenic surroundings of southern Indiana.

Here are some highlights:

•Hit the trails at Brown County State Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning with a Winter Hike. Hot chocolate and s’mores to warm you up along the way are provided by local Boy Scout Troop 190. The cost is $1 plus state park gate fees. The trail will be self-guided and easy to moderate in nature.

•You can trade the rugged terrain for a leisurely walk with some wine during the Salt Creek Sip N’ Stroll on Saturday and Sunday. Sample a few wines at Salt Creek Winery before taking an easy 2-mile stroll along the Salt Creek Trail. Ticket price is $10 and includes wine samples, a glass of wine, and a wine glass to take home. •Those up for a challenge can test endurance and take in the view during the Frosty Trails 5-Mile Run (or walk) on Jan. 14. Winding its way up and down the hills at Brown County State Park, the 5.2-mile race course is one you won’t forget. The Frosty 5 begins at 10:30 a.m. After the run, participants are welcome to warm up in the shelter house with food, drinks, and a fire. •A late morning yoga class is set for 11 a.m. on Sunday, and can be coupled with a pint of the local craft brew. Yoga on Tap is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and costs $20 to attend. Ticket price includes yoga class, beer, and keepsake Big Woods pint glass. Sign up today at browncounty.com/yoga.

•Learn how to create the perfect drink at Warm Up with Whiskey on Saturday at Out of the Ordinary Restaurant and Bar. Wilks & Wilson will show you how to make mouth-watering winter cocktails. Appetizers will be provided. The event starts at 3:30 p.m. The cost to attend is $25 and includes instruction, materials, a cocktail, appetizers, and a glass to take home. Pre-registration is preferred. Reserve your spot online at browncounty.com/whiskey. Stay after the class for a free swing dancing lesson at 5:30 p.m. After an hour of basic swing instruction the floor will open up for dancing. All ages are welcome to take part in the swing dance festivities free of charge.

•Immerse yourself in total tranquility during the weekend-long Winter Bliss Wellness Retreat. Activities include woodland walks, fireside contemplation, and more than a dozen wellness offerings including yoga, mindfulness, sound healing, relationship building, creative arts, and play. Winter Bliss will be held at the Abe Martin Lodge in the Brown County State Park, Friday through Sunday. Cost to attend is $90-$100. Registration is available online at register.winterbliss.org.

•Another way to unwind during Winter in the Woods is at The Deep Forest De-Stress on Saturday. Spend Saturday afternoon enjoying art, aromatherapy, and tea in the heart of the Village at The Robinwood Studio. Stop by anytime between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. for fireside crafts, free tea samples, and more.
