Ardwood “Art” Rhea Courtney Sr.

Ardwood “Art” Rhea Courtney Sr., 88, of Greenwood, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, surrounded by his children, at Community South Hospital.

He was born May 30, 1928, in Bluffton, the son of Paul and Vera “Hazel” (Rhea) Courtney.

He married Mary Christina (Schienbein) Courtney on March 19, 1949, who passed Nov. 19, 2008.

Art attended grade school in Petroleum, and in 1946, graduated from Emmerich Manual Training High School in Indianapolis, where he participated in the drama productions and was a member of the basketball and track teams.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during World War II in Japan and the Republic of Korea.

In 1990 he retired as a partner of Quality Gage Co., Inc.

He was an active member of United Faith Baptist Church in Acton.

He participated in senior volleyball at the Gathering Place in Greenwood.

Art will be lovingly remembered by his son, Ardwood Rhea (Marjorie) Courtney, Jr., daughters, Lisa Ann Courtney and Lori Jane Courtney; sister-in-law, Dorothy Jane (Schienbein) Gates; grandchildren, Brandon Rhea Courtney, DaShawn Renee Courtney, Corin Lynn (Courtney) Beikman and Cary Courtney; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and fellow members of United Faith Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; his brothers, Donald Beverly Courtney Sr. and Burton Arnold Courtney Sr.; and his brother-in-law, Jean Fairley Gates.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at G. H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home at The Gardens at Olive Branch, 1605 S. State Road 135, Greenwood. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Art will be laid to rest next to his wife Mary, in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood.
