Scoop: Second week of Christmas break

Your kids have opened all their gifts and been to all the family parties.

From celebrating New Year’s Eve kids style to ice skating, you can find plenty of ways to spend the rest of their break close to home and in Indianapolis.

Here are some ideas.

Kids can ring in the New Year at Noon Year parties at their local library branches. The White River Branch, 1664 Library Blvd., Greenwood will have its Noon Year party on Friday. The Clark-Pleasant, Franklin and Trafalgar branches will have their parties on Saturday. All branches will help students ring in the new year early with music, dancing, games and crafts.

Families can also choose to count down the new year early with the help of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Activities are available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, with countdowns throughout the day. Youngsters can learn about New Year’s celebrations around the world and participate in a family paper time capsule.

Kids can take a spin on the ice during open skating hours this week at the Perry Park Ice Rink, 451 E. Stop 11 Road, Indianapolis. Families can skate during open skate hours from noon to 2 p.m., 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Open skate is available from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for children. Skate rental is $3.

Students can get ready to go back to school with a dose of history from the Johnson County Museum of History, 135 N. Main St., Franklin. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. Local exhibits about Johnson County life are represented.

Families still have a chance to enjoy Christmas at the Zoo. The annual attraction is open 5 to 9 p.m. today. Lights adorn the zoo and children can see animals in their natural habitat.

Sport-loving youngsters can catch a college basketball game for free. Franklin College is offering free admission to home basketball games this week. The men play at 3 p.m. Saturday against Thomas More. The college is at 101 Branigin Blvd., Franklin.
