FRANKLIN
Gene Earl Hutson passed away Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016, at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin.
He was born Oct. 2, 1927, in Richmond, the son of Frank Alpheus “Al” Hutson and Ruth Helen (Bromley) Hutson.
A 1945 graduate of Richmond High School, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps before attending and graduating from Earlham College.
A drummer, in his high school and college years he was known for his big band orchestra, playing dances and events throughout the region. Music remained a lifelong passion.
He graduated from Indiana University School of Law in 1956 and worked 10 years for the Internal Revenue Service before returning to Wayne County, where he practiced law for 35 years. He served as Hagerstown town attorney, a Wayne County deputy prosecutor, and as a public defender.
He is a former president of the Wayne County Bar Association and the Wayne County chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Richmond, and was an active ham radio enthusiast.
He served more than 10 years in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary including service as a District Legal Officer and later in training activities from the Lake Michigan port of Frankfort, Michigan.
In retirement, he lived 10 years in Frankfort where he attended Saint Ann Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Ruth (Chamberlin) Hutson, whom he married Sept. 3, 1955, in Bloomington.
In addition, he is survived by six children; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Surviving children include Pamela (Gary) Morr of Adrian, Michigan, Jennifer (Tom) D’Andrea of Raleigh, North Carolina, Michael (Susan) Hutson of Indianapolis, Victoria (Checo) Muniz of San Antonio, Texas, Jeffrey (Heather) Hutson of Indianapolis and Amy (Jimmy) Combes of Gulf Breeze, Florida.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Saints Francis & Clare Roman Catholic Church, 5901 Olive Branch Road, Greenwood. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will be at St. Andrews Cemetery in Richmond.
Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin is handling arrangements.
