Four on the floor? Franklin wrestler aiming for history

Franklin High School wrestler Trevor Reese claims to not be pursuing history at the upcoming Johnson County meet.

The senior might just make some anyway.

As a freshman in 2013, Reese made an immediate impression by winning county in the 106-pound weight class. He followed it with county meet supremacy both as a sophomore (126 pounds) and junior (138).

On Saturday, Reese, who to this point of the season has competed at 152 pounds, will be wrestling in the 145 division at Indian Creek High School.

At stake — other than additional Grizzly Cubs points in the race for the team title — is a fourth consecutive individual championship for Reese in what would be his fourth different weight class.

“It would mean a lot, but it’s definitely not my end goal. That is to finish in the top three at state,” said Reese, a qualifier for the Evansville Semistate each of the past three seasons who continues to seek his first State Finals berth.

“I’ve been wrestling 152 all season, but, physically, I feel (145) will be a better weight class for me.”

Reese takes a 6-1 record to the mat this weekend.

He likely would have produced more victories had Reese not missed Franklin’s participation in the New Castle Invitational earlier this month.

Reese, an excellent student who carries a 3.97 grade-point average, was at Wabash College taking part in the school’s Scholars Weekend (he has already been offered the Presidential Scholarship).

Other potential college choices include the University of Indianapolis (Reese has been offered the Dean’s Scholarship) and Indiana University. Reese has been accepted into the latter’s prestigious Kelley School of Business.

In the meantime, Reese looks forward to returning to Indian Creek’s gymnasium, which he considers one of his preferred wrestling venues.

Longtime Grizzly Cubs coach Bob Hasseman has been around Reese long enough to not be surprised by anything the senior accomplishes.

This would include a fourth straight county wrestling title.

“Trevor has been a good, steady wrestler during his career here. A three-time semistate qualifier who always seems to get a tough draw,” Hasseman said. “But that happens sometimes.

“So far this season he’s been really good. Trevor’s a little bit bigger than last season, but he just feels more comfortable at 145 pounds, so that’s what we’re going to drop down to.”
