Eight earn AP All-State honors

Though he lost out on the coveted Mr. Football award, Russ Yeast made the most of his lone football season at Center Grove.

The talented senior finished second in the state coaches’ vote for Mr. Football behind Brownsburg quarterback Hunter Johnson, but he added another to his list of postseason honors Wednesday when he was named to The Associated Press Class 6A All-State team.

Yeast was a first-team selection at running back, one of four Center Grove players to make the 6A first team. He was joined by offensive lineman Clay Hadley, defensive lineman Dan Root and linebacker Bailey Bennett.

Class 4A state champion Roncalli had three first-team picks — quarterback Derek O’Connor, offensive lineman Will English and linebacker Cade Morgan.

Also earning first-team All-State recognition was Whiteland’s Ryder Emberton, who was chosen for the 5A squad as a defensive lineman.

Ten other area players earned honorable-mention All-State nods: Center Grove’s Trevor Hohlt, Titus McCoy, Nick Davis, Parker Ferguson and Logan Bontrager in Class 6A; Whiteland’s Jacob Ballain in Class 5A; Roncalli’s Ben Walesky and Christian Brueggemann in Class 4A; and Indian Creek’s Taylor Voris and Bryce Hogue in Class 3A.
