Home Bank helps with transitional shelter

A transitional home where homeless mothers live will get spruced up with a gift from a local bank.

Home Bank gave Haven Sanctuary in Greenwood $10,000 to help with their mission to help single, homeless mothers learn life skills.

A transitional home where some of their clients live will get a new roof and garage door with the gift, said Carol Naragon, executive director of Haven Sanctuary.

The bank has pledged to assist community nonprofit organizations with 10 percent of their quarterly net profits. Past nonprofit recipients include the Interchurch Food Pantry, KIC-IT, Girls Inc., and Habitat for Humanity, said Trent McWilliams, Johnson County market president.

McWilliams heard about Haven Sanctuary during a golf outing that benefits nonprofit organizations in the county. He asked Naragon to speak to a group of the bank’s employees who decide which groups will receive the bank’s donation.

Bank employees liked that Haven Sanctuary helps homeless mothers get back on their feet with education classes and gives them the skills to become productive members of society, McWilliams said.

“It touched and moved us,” he said. “The key thing that caught us is that they try to educate and get these ladies good jobs.”
