Commuters prepare for traffic shift

Commuters, be prepared for a big shift in traffic this week on Interstate 65.

Overnight Thursday, crews are planning to shift southbound traffic back to the west side of the interstate between Whiteland and just south of Franklin, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Traffic was shifted to the other side of the highway while crews were paving the interstate in a project to add another lane to each side of the interstate.

As long as weather allows, traffic will be moved to the right and center lanes of the interstate. The third, left lane is expected to open about 10 days later, the release said.

All three lanes of northbound I-65 are set to open in the second week of December.

Once the lanes are open, that will wrap up construction this year on I-65. Crews will return next year to finish paving and ramp work, the release said.
