FAFSA night at two high schools

Families who need help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid can get help at two upcoming events.

Whiteland Community High School and Center Grove High School are both having FAFSA help events.

Lindsay Miller, guidance counselor at Center Grove and Shannon Fritz, guidance director at Whiteland Community High School, tell you what you need to know.

When and where is the financial aid night?

Whiteland: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 24 at the school, 300 E. Main St.

Center Grove: 6 p.m. Dec. 6 at the school, 2717 S. Morgantown Road, Greenwood.

Who can come?

Whiteland: Open to anyone in the county

Center Grove: All families of Center Grove High School senior students are encouraged to attend. Families of juniors are also welcome to come.

What should families bring?

Whiteland: This is a help session in a computer lab. Parents should bring the orange FAFSA folder and all required documents to file the FAFSA. This event is meant to help families individually complete and file the FAFSA on site. Families can also get FAFSA results interpreted. (The orange FAFSA folders are provided by the National Center for College Costs to every senior in the county based on sponsoring through the Johnson County Community Foundation.)

Center Grove High School: 21st Century Scholars should bring their iPads. No materials are necessary for families of other students.

Why is this something the school hosts?

Whiteland: This is such an important process and the consequences can be great if it is not filed or filed incorrectly. The process can be confusing, especially to first time college families.

Center Grove: Most seniors and their families have a lot of questions about financial aid. This allows the high school to give a lot of information to all parents and students at the same time.

Who will be helping the families?

Whiteland: The National Center for College Costs is conducting the help session and it is sponsored by the Johnson County Community Foundation. They are sponsoring and paying for the fees to conduct the help session, we are simply the county’s host site.

Center Grove: Representatives from Center Grove High School and IUPUI will share with families the financial aid application process for post-secondary education, including information about the FAFSA application, student and parent loans and scholarships. There will be information about how to use Family Connection to access available scholarships and request transcripts. A representative from 21st Century Scholars will give students who are eligible information about what they need to do to remain eligible and access the scholarship when they need it.
