New Greenwood Middle School vandalized

More cameras are being installed at the new Greenwood Middle School, and more police are being sent to patrol the area after someone broke in and vandalized the building under construction.

Last week, police were called to the new school off of Averitt Road after employees found someone had gotten into the building overnight on Wednesday.

Inside, they found walls were spray painted, including a large smiley face, and others had caulk thrown on them, according to the Greenwood Police Department report.

The damage was estimated at about $1,500, the report said.

Construction has been ongoing since last year on the new $27 million, three-story school, located near Freedom Park on Greenwood’s southwest side. The 160,000-square-foot building is set to open for the next school year.

No other vandalism has been reported at the school, police said.

After last week’s report, additional cameras were planned at the school, including motion-detecting cameras that would notify the construction company when they are turned on, the report said.

Greenwood police also were sending additional officers to patrol the area, the report said.

Other construction sites around the county have also had issues with vandalism and theft, including where a new Meijer is being built near Commerce Drive and U.S. 31 in Franklin.
