A political newcomer will represent Johnson County and several other Indiana counties in Congress.
Republican Trey Hollingsworth won the 9th Congressional District seat, defeating a challenge from Democrat Shelli Yoder and Libertarian Russell Brooksbank.
Hollingsworth will replace U.S. Rep. Todd Young, who ran for a seat representing Indiana in the U.S. Senate. The District 9 seat represents a large swath of central and southern Indiana, from Johnson County to the Ohio River.
Hollingsworth, who lives in Jeffersonville, will serve a two-year term in Congress and propose and vote on legislation that impacts the U.S. and the federal budget.
All three candidates in the race had said the jobs and the economy were top issues, and all pointed to their experience as key reasons why they should win the seat.
Hollingsworth, who created HCP, a company that rehabilitated abandoned warehouses and manufacturing sites, had won the Republican Party’s nomination after a five-way race for the seat in the spring.
He will begin his term in January.
