Speak softly, carry a big stick: Center Grove’s Schier lets her game do talking

Shelby Schier is a young woman of few words. The Center Grove senior prefers to let her golf swing do the talking.

It spoke volumes this past season.

At her best when the pressure was highest, Schier helped lead the Trojans to county and sectional championships, and she is the Daily Journal’s 2016 Player of the Year in girls golf.

Schier posted rounds of 75 at three of Center Grove’s biggest events: the Johnson County championship, the State Preview tournament and at the Center Grove Sectional, where she tied for first place individually before falling in a playoff.

“She was much better in tournaments than she was over nine holes,” Center Grove coach Jim Williams said.

Schier was still pretty good in regular-season matches, though — her nine-hole average of 40 was the county’s best. She helped lead the Trojans to the county championship as well as the sectional title and a berth in the regional.

Next year, Schier will take her talents north to play for Valparaiso University.
