Woodmen blank Mooresville, face Rebels next

Greenwood’s football team continued its run of dominance against Mooresville on Friday night, posting a 27-0 win against the visiting Pioneers in the second round of Class 4A sectional action.

Including a 22-14 regular-season overtime victory seven weeks ago, the Woodmen (8-3) have now won eight consecutive games against the Pioneers, dating back to 2010.

Greenwood, seeking its first sectional title since 2005, will host top-ranked Roncalli next Friday. The 11-0 Rebels rallied for a one-point semifinal victory at Lebanon.

The first points of Friday’s semifinal game came during Greenwood’s third possession of the opening quarter, when sophomore Isaiah Borjas scored on a 10-yard touchdown run. The Woodmen led 14-0 early in the second period after junior Brandon Rosado scored from 23 yards out.

The Pioneers (2-9), who totaled only 63 yards of offense in the opening half, missed a 31-yard field goal attempt midway through the second quarter.

The only points of the third period came courtesy of Greenwood senior kicker Damon Maynard, who connected on field goals of 26 and 30 yards. A defensive stand late in the quarter — when the Woodmen stopped four consecutive rushing attempts inside their own 2-yard line — prevented Mooresville from putting its first points on the board.

Rossado, who scored another touchdown late in the game on a 31-yard run, led the Greenwood ground attack with 132 yards on 20 carries. Borjas rushed 13 times for 84 yards.

Junior quarterback Eli Bunch passed for 125 yards to lead the Pioneers’ offense. Sophomore Jon Eineman caught nine of his passes for 89 yards.
