City adding parking lot near downtown

A new parking lot will soon be added just south of downtown Franklin.

The city purchased a piece of land owned by the Johnson County Public Library for $7,000, Franklin Mayor Joe McGuinness said.

The property, located at the northeast corner of Wayne and Main streets, will be paved and can be used for parking, especially during events in downtown Franklin, McGuinness said.

The county library first purchased the land in 2009 and planned to use it for future parking needs, library director Lisa Lintner said.

Employees would sometimes use the lot for overflow parking, such as when downtown events were going on, but it was never paved, she said.

City officials began looking to buy the property to add about 15 parking spaces, especially with the new event venue planned for the former Garment Factory on Wayne Street, McGuinness said.
