Hospital sets up step-tracking contest

Johnson Memorial Health is encouraging residents to lose weight and develop healthy habits with a new countywide contest.

The hospital’s Weight Loss and Wellness Center’s “Step it Up!,” program encourages participants to take more steps to win cash prizes.

Teams of four to nine people will compete to get more active from Nov. 14 through Dec. 13. Participants can win cash prizes funded independently and guaranteed by HealthyWage.

In addition to the individual level competition, employers can compete with groups of employees in the company vs. company division. Registration for companies is open now through the start date.

According to a statement from Johnson Memorial Health, more than 35 percent of all Indiana adults are obese or overweight, and the state spends an annual $2 billion in obesity-related health expenses.

Participants can use any step trackers including Fitbit, Jawbone, Apple or Android to track their steps during the challenge. Each participant pays a $30 registration fee and receives a personal step goal for the challenge based on their current activity level as measured on their device.

Teams will win the challenge if their team achieves an average of the individual team member’s goals for the challenge. All of the money collected will be redistributed equally to the participants on teams that hit their goal for the challenge. HealthyWage collects a 25 percent administration fee from the total money collected for administering the challenge.
