Scoop Q and A: Super Hero Run

Local runners and walkers can lace up their sneakers to help a local school raise money for a children’s hospital.

The 5K Superhero Run for Riley is at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 12 at Whiteland Community High School, 300 E. Main St., Whiteland.

Katie DeClercq, club adviser at the school, tells you what you need to know about the event.

» Who can attend?

The 5K is open to anyone.

» How much does it cost?

The 5K is $25 for the registration and an additional $5 for the T-shirt if registration is received before Nov. 6. The 1K Fun Run is $10 with an additional $5 for the T-shirt.

» Where does the money go?

The 5K is part of the Whiteland Community High School Riley Dance Marathon fundraising effort for Riley Hospital for Children.

» What is the route like?

The 5K begins in the football stadium and allows for participants to run on the track and then go out through the campus, a local neighborhood and end up back on the track at the stadium.

» How long can I register?

We will take registrations up until the start of the event. However, if participants would like to purchase a T-shirt the deadline is Nov. 6.

» How did you get the idea to do a run?

We originally got the idea after seeing the success that other high school dance marathons had with it, as well as Clark Elementary when they were raising funds for new playground equipment.

» How many students are involved in planning the run?

There are 10 Executive Council members that do the majority of the planning for the event and then 45 committee members that will help the day of the event to make sure it is a success.

» What do you want participants to get from the run?

Most importantly to have fun and know that they are helping to make a difference in the lives of patients at Riley Hospital for Children.

» What do you want organizing students to get from the run?

The students who organize these events for the dance marathon, as well as the 5K, take on a huge endeavor. They see these events from the beginning of the planning process all the way through to the day of the event and they are able to do amazing things. They learn how to overcome obstacles, make adjustments and take on responsibilities.
