Charles E. Mellencamp

Charles E. Mellencamp, 81, of Greenwood, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016.

He was born to the late Edwin and Irene Mellencamp on Aug. 5, 1935, in Cortland.

Charles worked for Greenwood Community School Corporation for 36 years as the director of guidance, formerly teaching English and serving as the English department chairman.

He was a member of Community Church of Greenwood, Gideon’s International and Greenwood Christian Academy Education Board.

Charles is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Holzlider Mellencamp; two daughters, Elizabeth M. Johnson (David McMillan) and Rebecca J. Chan (Edward M. Chan); five grandchildren, Nate and Claire Brock, Rachel Chan, Sarah Chan and Conner McMillan; along with several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William L. Mellencamp.

Calling will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Community Church of Greenwood, 1477 W. Main St., Greenwood. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Community Church of Greenwood, with calling from 10 a.m. to service time. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Community Church of Greenwood.
