ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Police say a man was shot by an intruder inside his Alexandria-area apartment.

Fairfax County police say the shooting occurred early Sunday morning and that the victim was shot with his own gun.

According to police, the man was home when he awoke to find someone inside his apartment. He confronted the intruder with a gun, and they began to fight over it. The intruder got control of the weapon and shot the man.

Police say the man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The intruder got away and police are trying to identify him.

Police have not released any information about a possible motive.
