GUILFORD, Vt. — State police say a Vermont man was killed when his pickup truck carrying two dogs crashed in Guilford.

It happened just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Police say 48-year-old Joseph Earle of Guilford was traveling eastbound when his vehicle left the roadway.

Police say the truck hit a large tree head-on, deflected sideways and slid down an embankment leading to a brook. The truck came to a rest against a tree that kept it from sliding to the bottom of the embankment.

Police say Earle wasn’t wearing a seatbelt when he was found dead by several neighbors who heard the crash.

One of the dogs in the car suffered a head laceration. The second dog suffered injuries considered life-threatening and was euthanized.

The investigation is ongoing.
