Final play lifts Edinburgh victory

Earlier this season, Edinburgh lost a football game on the last play of the game.

On Friday night against Wes-Del, the Lancers were able to sample the other side of the emotional spectrum with a thrilling 28-26 victory.

On the game’s final play, junior quarterback Jake Atha tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to senior Zack Smiley in the back corner of the end zone for the deciding points.

“We had stopped Wes-Del with about 1:50 to go and did a good job going down the field,” Edinburgh coach Derrick Ball said. “We dropped a pass and then hit the one with Atha throwing to Smiley.”

The Lancers now ride the program’s first two-game winning streak since midway through the 2014 season into next week’s final regular-season game at home against Southside Home School.

Other Edinburgh touchdowns came from Grant Godsey on a 2-yard run, Smiley’s 82-yard kickoff return and an Atha pass to Chris Burris.

The Lancers trailed Wes-Del 26-16 at the half.

“We had a real heartfelt talk at halftime, and our players responded really well,” Ball said. “Ever since that Milan game (a 72-0 loss in Week 6), we put it behind us real fast and now we’ve won two games in a row.”
