HAVANA — Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, is visiting Havana in one of a series of high-level visits planned in the waning months of the Obama administration.
Biden, a teacher, was accompanied by State Department officials responsible for educational and women’s issues. She visited a teachers’ college and toured Havana’s historic center and planned to attend a friendly game between the U.S. and Cuban men’s national soccer teams later Friday.
The Obama administration is eager to bolster its detente with Cuba by sending high-ranking officials to Havana and welcome members of President Raul Castro’s government to Washington. U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman also visited Havana this week.
