Rain holds court at Center Grove

Rain was the dominant force at the Center Grove boys tennis sectional on Friday afternoon, pushing everyone off of the courts after about an hour of semifinal action.

Johnson County champion Franklin, though, only needed that long to assure itself a place in the championship match.

The Grizzly Cubs managed to put away three match points before the precipitation hit, clinching a victory against Indian Creek. No matches had yet been settled in the other semifinal between Center Grove and Greenwood.

Both semifinal matches will resume at 1:30 p.m. today, weather permitting.

Noah Roberts got the Grizzly Cubs on the board with a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory against Trace Zachery at No. 1 singles, and Franklin’s No. 2 doubles team of Josiah Rockey and Ethan Klem swept Cody Hart and Jeremy Lee, 6-0, 6-0.

Franklin sealed the deal when its No. 1 duo of Logan Snyder and Jacob Rockey defeated Scott Russell and Bryce Waddell 6-4, 6-1 just minutes before the rains came.

Regardless of who prevails in the other semifinal between the Trojans and Woodmen, the Grizzly Cubs come in with the head-to-head advantage. Franklin beat Center Grove for the county title earlier this fall, 4-1, and it owns a pair of close victories against Greenwood, one in the regular season and the other in the county semifinals.

The Woodmen did edge Franklin for the Mid-State Conference tournament title last weekend.
