Rebels’ defense remains stingy

Roncalli’s defense has gotten more and more miserly as the season has progressed. On Friday, city rival Brebeuf Jesuit became the latest victim.

The Rebels held the Braves to 169 total yards, including just 34 on the ground, and yielded only a pair of field goals in a 14-6 victory.

Roncalli (6-0, 2-0 Circle City Conference) has yielded a total of just 12 points over its last three games.

Brebeuf (3-3, 0-2) came out of the opening quarter with a 3-0 lead, but the Rebels grabbed the upper hand for good in the second quarter on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Derek O’Connor to Jacob Luedeman.

Kenny Gillum made it a 14-3 game with a 3-yard run in the third quarter, capping a 15-play, 84-yard drive that ate up nearly seven and a half minutes.

Dylan Williams followed with an interception on the Braves’ ensuing possession.

O’Connor was 8 of 13 passing for 96 yards and added 68 yards rushing on 19 carries. Gillum ran the ball 17 times for 62 yards. Roncalli totaled 273 yards of offense on the night.

The Rebels, 6-0 for the first time since 1999, host Martinsville next week for Homecoming.
