Greenwood approves increase in trash fees

Greenwood residents will begin paying a little more next year to have their garbage and recycling hauled away.

The Greenwood City Council approved a $1.50 increase to the monthly trash and recycling collection rate with an 8-0 vote this week. The increase will be spread over three years and begin in 2017.

Rates for 2016 are $13.47 per month. That will increase to $13.97 per month in 2017, $14.47 per month in 2018 and $14.97 per month in 2019.

City officials say the price increase is necessary due to increased costs of maintaining the service in recent years. Those increase have come from a higher contract with the trash carrier and costs from the leaf and limb disposal program.
