Roncalli rolls to fifth straight win

One of these years, Scecina will find a way to beat Roncalli. This year wasn’t the one.

For the 21st time in a row, the Rebels rolled past their longtime rivals, riding a quick start to a 31-6 home win on Friday night.

Derek O’Connor had the hot hand early for Roncalli, throwing for three first-half touchdowns. The first was a 12-yard toss to Jacob Luedeman on the Rebels’ opening drive.

Luke Smock and Nate Fischer added scoring grabs of 7 and 10 yards, respectively, in the second quarter, and a 44-yard field goal by Patrick Sandler on the final play of the half stretched the lead to 24-0 at the midway point.

Kenny Gillum ran for a 16-yard touchdown to open the second half before Roncalli called off the dogs.

O’Connor finished the night 8 of 13 passing for 85 yards. Gillum amassed 69 yards rushing on 14 attempts. Roncalli outgained Scecina on the evening, 243 to 157.

The Rebels improved to 5-0 with the win, the first time the program has won its first five since the 2004 state championship season.
