Police investigate theft from solar field construction site

Investigators are looking for information about as many as four suspects who burglarized and ransacked a construction trailer and equipment at a solar field that is being built on State Road 135, south of State Road 44.

At least three, but possibly four, burglars went onto the 10-acre property sometime after workers left Tuesday and before the workers arrived Wednesday morning. Cameras caught them on the property, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

A worker told police that the construction trailer on the site had been trashed and items were missing, the report said. Several electrical boxes had been opened, and wires had been cut. The fence around the property had been cut, and a hole had been cut in the side of the trailer, the report said.

The $2.5 million solar farm is a joint project between Hoosier Energy and Johnson County REMC and construction was set to be finished in October.

Surveillance videos captured the thieves on the property between 10:30 p.m. to shortly after 1 a.m., Sheriff Doug Cox said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office tip-line at 317-346-4654.
