WARWICK, R.I. — A Warwick parks and recreation employee has been fired and a second has resigned following the drowning of a 6-year-old boy at a beach last month.
Mayor Scott Avedisian said Thursday that three lifeguards should have been on duty on Aug. 14, but only two were and one of them lacked a beach lifeguard certification.
Jamir Stewart was swimming with family that day when he was reported missing. Firefighters and beachgoers formed a human chain to walk into the water to search for the boy. The victim was found by someone in the chain.
The Providence boy was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Avedisian says the city plans to work to formulate a series of programs and changes before beaches reopen next year.
