NEWARK, N.J. — Prosecutors say a northern New Jersey police officer has been charged with sexually assaulting a young girl.

A spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday that Manny Marques was arrested in Newark following the alleged incident over the weekend.

He faces charges of aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities say the charges aren’t related to his work as a Newark police officer.

City officials say the 14-year police veteran has been suspended without pay.

Newark Fraternal Order of Police President James Stewart Jr. tells NJ.com the group knows about the allegations. He says the accusations are “horrible” and “out of character” for Marques.

Marques didn’t have a defense attorney listed following his Tuesday arraignment. Authorities say he remains jailed on $225,000 bail.
