FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A fire gutted a Cumberland County school bus in Fayetteville, but didn’t injure any of the 15 students on board.

Media outlets report that the students on board were from Seventy-First Classical Middle School and were on their way home Wednesday afternoon when the fire occurred.

Dianne Grumelot, director of transportation for Cumberland County Schools, says neither the students nor the bus driver were injured.

The fire was called in shortly after 3 p.m. when the bus driver noticed smoke coming from the hood. When firefighters arrived, heavy fire was showing from the vehicle.

Fayetteville Fire Battalion Chief Richard Whiteside says it took about 13 minutes to get the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
