Nine local students have been named semifinalists in a scholarship competition.
Eight Center Grove High School students and one home-schooled student all were named semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship program.
Finalists will be selected in the spring.
In order to become semifinalists, students had to score highest on the qualifying exam and turn in a detailed application showing leadership and outstanding academic abilities, according to a news release from the program.
Students named semifinalists are:

- Peter J. Golder, Center Grove High School
- Magen L. Libke, Center Grove High School
- Max T. Newport, Center Grove High School
- Emily D. Simon, Center Grove High School
- Aaron R. Thielmeyer, Center Grove High School
- Sarah A. Varney, Center Grove High School
- Akul Vijayvargiya, Center Grove High School
- Rachel E. Reynolds, home-schooled
