Greenwood airport changing name

City officials are seeking a name change for the Greenwood Municipal Airport with hopes to raise its profile to travelers.

The proposed name β€” Indy South Greenwood Airport β€” will help attract people who may not realize how close Greenwood is to downtown Indianapolis, airport manager Lori Curless said.

β€œIt puts ourselves on the map,” Curless said. β€œWe are the closest airport to downtown Indianapolis.”

The Greenwood airport would not be alone in changing its name to attach itself to Indianapolis. Terry Airport, northwest of Indianapolis, changed its name to Indianapolis Executive Airport. Mount Comfort Airport, east of Indianapolis, changed its name to Indianapolis Regional Airport in 2011.

Before the name change becomes official, it will need approval from the Greenwood Board of Aviation Commissioners and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The city commission will consider the name change during its October meeting.

Then the Federal Aviation Administration would need to approve it, a process that could take as long as nine months, Curless said.

The airport has been putting off replacing items, such as signs and uniforms, while waiting for a decision, Curless said.
