Two arrested in theft case

A man and woman were arrested after multiple thefts from vehicles were reported east of Greenwood during the weekend.

Christopher Hatfield, 33, 1506 Leonard St., Indianapolis, was arrested on a charge of burglary and two charges of theft. Amanda Rager, 36, who listed herself as homeless, was arrested on a charge of theft.

The two were arrested after police stopped a vehicle that a resident on Griffith Road, off Rocklane Road, had seen them taking items from the garage of a nearby home on Tuesday just before 9:30 a.m. During the weekend, the same homeowners reported someone had rummaged through their vehicles and stolen keys and a garage door opener, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

At least two other thefts were reported from homes in the same area during the weekend.

Police stopped the vehicle that the resident reported seeing taking items from the garage and found it was reported stolen from Indianapolis, the report said.

Hatfield was driving and told police he was involved in at least two of the thefts from the weekend. In one instance, he was confronted by a homeowner, who struck the vehicle he was driving with a metal object, the report said.

Rager is not believed to have been with Hatfield during the weekend thefts, but the resident told police Rager was helping put items into the vehicle that Hatfield was taking from the garage Tuesday, the report said.

Both were taken to the Johnson County jail.

Hatfield was held on $7,600 bond. Rager was held on $1,000 bond.
