Smiley leads Lancers to first win of season

Edinburgh football player Zack Smiley wasn’t selective when it came to ways to help the Lancers pick up their first victory of the season.

Smiley scored three touchdowns Friday night in his team’s 28-22 victory against Oldenburg Academy in a game played at Mount St. Joseph’s University in Cincinnati.

Smiley ran one in from a yard out, caught a 10-yard touchdown pass and, for good measure, intercepted a pass and ran it in from 35 yards.

Edinburgh is now 1-2 entering next week’s home game against Switzerland County.

Second-year Lancers coach Derrick Ball for a third straight week saw inspired football from his team — especially early.

“I’m happy for the win, but we can still be better,” Ball said. “We start the game up 16-0, and then it was 16-16 and later tied at 22-all.

“Just mental mistakes. It’s not because we’re tired anymore because we’ve got a good player rotation. But a win does make the hour and 45 minute trip back a lot more enjoyable.”

Edinburgh’s other touchdown came on a 95-yard run from sophomore Grant Godsey.
