Plan on dialing more digits Oct. 15

The deadline for you to begin using 10 digits when making phone calls has been pushed back.

The requirement has been extended to Oct. 15 by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

Beginning Oct. 15, all local phone calls in the 317 area code will need to be dialed with 10 digits, or they will not be completed.

With 317 numbers projected to run out by the end of the year, the commission approved the addition of a 463 area code, which would over lap with the 317 area. That means phone calls will need to be dialed using 10 digits, including the area code.

The commission extended the deadline from Sept. 17 to Oct. 15 in response to a request from the Electronic Security Association, which said some alarm companies may be behind in their preparations to switch to the 10-digit system.
