Greenwood facade project: Where it stands

Work continues to revitalize the façades of 21 downtown Greenwood buildings. Here is a look at what’s new:

Work started

Work has started on 15 of the 21 buildings that are included in the project. Some will be finished as soon as this month, and others will be done in October and November, but the goal is to wrap up work before the contract end date of Dec. 31. Work is expected to finish on the west end of the project area first.

What’s happening

Buildings have gotten new windows and doors, and masonry work has been done, along with some work to the interior of the buildings. More windows are set to be delivered this week, and could be installed as soon as this weekend.

Weather impact

A rainy August has meant that some contractors, such as masonry workers, can’t do work on certain days. But usually, crews do interior work instead on those days, project manager John Shell said.

What you should know

Officials are asking traffic to slow down, especially near the intersection of Main Street and Madison Avenue where work is ongoing, to protect construction workers. They are also asking pedestrians to keep a safe distance from work that is being done and cross the street before sidewalk closures.
