Horace W. Hays, 89, of Morgantown, passed away Tuesday morning, Aug. 23, 2016, at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born May 29, 1927, in Madison County, the son of the late Walter and Audra Vern (West) Hays.

Horace graduated from Markleville High School in 1945 and was a graduate of Purdue University in 1957.

He was a member of the Markleville East Christian Church.

He and his wife Nancy had been married 45 years.

He proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He was the assessor of Adams Civil Township, 1963-1966, trustee of Adams School township and Adams Civil township from 1963 to 1965, and treasure of Madison County and City of Anderson from 1967 to 1970.

He was the past master of the Masonic lodge No. 629 and a member of the Markleville Amvets, Scottish Rite and Markleville Lions Club.

He loved farming and spending time with his family. He was the proud sponsor of the trophy for Madison County 4-H Grand Champion Steer for 72 years.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Hays; daughter, Jan (Wayne) Fox of Markleville, son, David Jay (Debbie) Hays of Markleville; stepsons, John (Debbie) Deverter of Spencer, Joseph (Terri) Deverter of Terre Haute, stepdaughter, Kimberly (Duane) McKay of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Doris and Ann.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Markleville East Christian Church in Markleville, with Maynard Powell officiating and calling one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Harlan Cemetery in Wilkinson. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Condo and Son Funeral home in Wilkinson.
