Lancers lose at Brown County, 21-20

Second-year Edinburgh football coach Derrick Ball watched his Lancers put together an outstanding first half of play Friday night at Brown County.

Leading 20-0 entering the third quarter, Edinburgh wound up giving up three second-half touchdowns to the Eagles in what was a heartbreaking 21-20 loss.

The Lancers, who dressed 24 players to play an opponent that defeated them by 28 points last season, surged ahead thanks to touchdown runs from Jake Atha, Bryce Burton and Zack Smiley.

“(Brown County) had three times as many players as us, and we just started to wear down,” Ball said. “I’m happy because the kids are really starting to buy in to what we’re trying to do, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t mental mistakes.”

Burton led all Edinburgh runners with 52 yards rushing on 15 carries. Burton finished with 42 yards on only three attempts.

Next for Edinburgh is next Friday’s game at North Decatur.
