Copper wire stolen from cell tower

A thief stole more than 200 feet of copper wire from a cellphone tower, causing a power outage for the tower.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the tower in the 3800 block of County Road 700E, near Amity, just before 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Sprint cellphone tower had a power outage, and an employee noticed the gate to the tower was open, the breaker had been shut off and copper wiring had been cut and removed, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

About 200 feet of copper wiring had been stolen.

Nearby residents had seen a car in the area around 6 p.m. Tuesday, which is when the outage started, the report said.

The employee suspected the thief knew the combination to the gate lock, since it had not been damaged, the report said.
