Police: Woman leaves scene of accident, arrested

A Greenwood woman was arrested after police said she left the scene of an accident and then fought with deputies.

Jahal B. Jani, 24, 480 S. Peterman Road, was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, resisting law enforcement, battery on an officer, disorderly conduct and leaving the scene of an accident.

Just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, sheriff’s deputies were called to the area of Smith Valley and Peterman roads, where a motorist said he was following a vehicle that left the scene of an accident. The vehicle continued driving on Smith Valley Road, eventually turning onto State Road 37, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

A sheriff’s deputy caught up to the vehicle near state roads 37 and 144, where it turned into a parking lot and the tire fell off, the report said.

The deputy found a large amount of damage to the vehicle and that the airbags had been deployed. Jani refused to get out, and then got out and fought the deputy when he tried to put her in handcuffs, kicking him in the leg, the report said.

Deputies placed Jani on the ground and shackled her legs. They also found marijuana inside the vehicle, the report said.

Jani was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital for treatment of a cut to her arm and to draw her blood for a blood alcohol content test. Initial results showed her blood-alcohol content was .23 percent, nearly three times the legal limit to be considered intoxicated, the report said.

Jani was taken to the Johnson County jail and was released on $12,400 bond.
