Suspect returns to site of stolen truck, escapes police

Police found a stolen truck, but not the person who took it, after the thief came back to the home while the resident was making a report.

Just before 1 a.m. Friday, a resident in the 3600 block of County Road 75W near Franklin reported someone had stolen a truck from his property and tampered with another. Several items also were missing from his garage, including a torch and chainsaws, according to the report filed with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

While speaking with the deputy, a truck pulled up at the end of the man’s driveway and then sped away. The deputy tried to follow the truck but couldn’t find it, the report said.

Deputies later spotted the stolen truck nearby in another driveway. Police dogs and other officers were called to look for the driver but were not able to find anyone, the report said.

Investigators collected evidence from the truck, including DNA samples, and the truck was returned to the homeowner, the report said.
