Halena (Provart Smith) Thompson

INDIANAPOLIS

Halena (Provart Smith) Thompson passed away Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, at her home in Indianapolis, where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law. She was 96 years old.

Mrs. Thompson was born in Franklin County, Illinois, to Guy and Flora Provart on Nov. 10, 1919, their only child.

She graduated from Benton High School in Benton, Illinois, at the age of 16 and attended Illinois State University at Normal, Illinois. She went to work for an abstract company processing abstracts for oil companies and traveled a lot with her job.

She married Charlie C. Smith on April 5, 1942. After briefly divorcing, they remarried June 30, 1946, and had two children. Mr. Smith preceded her in death Jan. 28, 1961, and she went on to raise her children as a single mom as well as caring for her invalid mother.

She briefly remarried in 1997 to Ty Thompson, but unfortunately he died a few months later.

She went on to work many years at the Indiana State Rehabilitation Office doing clerical work and did not retire until she was 74 years old.

Halena loved traveling, whether with her senior citizen group of friends or with family. She had a passion for genealogy and would spend countless hours in various libraries or online tracking down clues on her ancestors. She leaves behind reams of research and ancestral charts.

Halena is survived by her children, Judy West (Paul) and Rick Smith (Kristen); grandchildren, Michael West (Stephanie), Tony West (Katie), Steven West (Aaron), Chris West (Amanda), Sarah Smith Miller and Rachel Smith Bruno (Matthew); and great-grandchildren, Kyle West, Ryan West, Chase Utterback, Logan West, Hannah Thomas, Haley Thomas , Hannah West, Lorelai Miller, Lyza Miller, Dante Bruno and Dominic Bruno.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to St. Francis Home Hospice team for all their help during this time and to Stephanie West who greatly helped with her wonderful nursing skills.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Little & Sons Funeral Home, 4901 E. Stop 11 Road, Indianapolis. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
