Charles E. Surina

INDIANAPOLIS

Charles E. Surina, 95, a resident of Indianapolis, passed away at Methodist Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016. He was born in Windber, Pennsylvania to Joseph and Mary Surina.

He was married to the late Jeanette Lyons Surina, former mayor of Greenwood.

Charles served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and the Korean War. He left the armed services with the rank of major. He was a graduate of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Charles became a general contractor forming his own business, Surina-Buzek Construction Co. with Clyde Buzek based in Indianapolis. Throughout his career his company built many business and school buildings in Indianapolis and the surrounding counties.

He and his wife developed the Chipperfield Shoppes in Greenwood, the Big Red Barn roller-skating rink and Surina Development Co.

They enjoyed playing golf and were members of the Country Club of Indianapolis and Wilderness Country Club in Naples, Florida. They were members of the Our Lady of Greenwood parish.

Charles was a wonderful and kind husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother and friend to all. He lived life fully and inspired many with his achievements, love of family and devotion to country and community.

He is survived by his four children, Kathleen Surina Grove, Suzanne Surina Baur (James) of Suffolk, Virginia, Bill Surina and David Surina (Ann); seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Agnes Heatherstone (Bill) of Springfield, Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.
